Sketching in Rome

From our room with a view

Largo di Torre Argentina

We recently had the good fortune to spend three days in Rome staying in a delightful suite overlooking the ruins in Largo di Torre Argentina.

How did I score three days in Rome?  Well, Italy happened to be playing Ireland at Rugby in the old Olympic Stadium.

I would probably have been bored to tears had Italy not won!

The highlight of the trip (for me) was discovering a wonderful little kosher restaurant in the old Ghetto where I finally saw how to prepare Carciofi alla Romana.  The fridge is now full of globe artichokes.

Patonga Pelican Linocut

 Linocut 10 cm x 13cm
One of my favourite things about going home to Australia is to see the pelicans at Patonga.  Well it won't be long now but in the meantime I've made this two plate linocut.  Not sure which I prefer.  I think the first one.

Dovecote

Sometimes you'll hear New Zealanders claiming they are as happy as a 'box of birds'.  Well I'd be as happy as a Barrel of Birds if I owned this.

Ponte Vecchio Sketch

Ponte Vecchio Shops

As always I took my sketching gear to Florence last week.  As always I spent more time in art shops than actually making art.

I did manage to take a few photos so today I pretended I'd actually taken my sketchbook out on the Ponte Vecchio.  Working from the computer screen I attempted to keep the sketch as loose at it would have been sketched on location.  I restricted myself to my new tiny W&N Field Box full of colours I don't normally have in my palette and making do with the tiny container of water.  Obviously I'm in training for the summer!

The actual sketch was done with my 'new' vintage Italian Omas Extra desk pen that is around the same age as HWEM!  If you are ever in Florence my favourite pen shop, Casa della Stilografica is worth a visit.

Super flexible gold nib from the days when Omas made their own.

Bird Life Sketches

Black Cap

These sketches are in my Stillman & Birn 9" x 12" Delta Series sketchbook.  The ivory paper and spiral binding don't make for easy scanning.

Jay

You've probably been wondering where I've been.  Well I've been wondering myself.  I think I'm back now.
